WHAT:

There is no better time than now to get involved and try to help others. Author and Pastor Miles McPherson says, “Look around you. We’re facing economic chaos, endless wars, AIDS, famine, ecological ruin, political corruption – the list is endless. Your neighbors are in desperate need of love and a helping hand.”

Volunteering with community service projects benefits the participant, the recipient and their communities:

  • the participant develops an awareness of his or her own talents and abilities, as well as personal satisfaction from being able to give back for their blessings and good fortunes
  • the recipient finds support and encouragement to overcome his or her current challenge
  • the community grows as individuals become neighbors and partners

Everyone hopes 2010 is better than 2009. Making it a better year starts by looking inward, then reaching out to help others.

WHO:

Miles McPherson is founder and pastor of The Rock Church in San Diego. Prior to that, following his NFL career, he founded Miles Ahead Ministries.

WHEN:

Monday, Jan. 4 – Friday, Jan. 8, 2010. Additional dates are available by appointment.

WHERE:

Via phone from San Diego, Calif. and New York City

DETAILS:

In 2009, McPherson led his church to volunteer more than 600,000 hours of community service in San Diego and the surrounding region. Congregants started more than 100 different programs and ministries to help others. According to San Diego’s mayor, the city saved $1.6 million through these volunteer service hours, and millions more were saved county-wide.

McPherson’s new book, “Do Something: Make Your Life Count” (Baker Books), releases on January 1, 2010. The book provides examples of people who helped others in some way and is filled with information and practical steps readers can take to get involved themselves.

When McPherson started The Rock Church in 2000, more than 3,300 people attended on its first day. The predominantly young, urban congregation has grown to an average of 12,000 with more than 100 ministries, at least 74 of them volunteer-led community ministries. McPherson has appeared on “Larry King Live,” “Good Morning America,” “The O’Reilly Factor,” and “Fox & Friends.” He and his wife have three children and live in San Diego.
