BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE:
International Charity Groups Caught Between
Rising Food Costs and Decreasing U.S. Donations

WHO:

Mark Bush, Chief Operating Officer for CURE International, a medical charity providing care to disabled children in teaching hospitals throughout the developing world. Unlike most third world hospitals, CURE provides food for its patients, recognizing the role of proper nutrition in the healing process. Rising food prices have made it much more difficult to continue to serve patients in this way.

WHAT:
With U.S. charitable contributions dropping and rising food costs around the world, it has become difficult for CURE International to meet both needs and budgets. Along with specific donor appeals based on the need, CURE International is working with each hospital on ways that they can meet their budgets while still providing nutritional food to their patients and care givers. In Zambia, they turned extra acres into a garden to supplement their food supply. Mark Bush can talk about how CURE and other charities respond in these difficult times, and why charitable giving is more important now than ever.
